Academics

Middle School: Grades 5-7

To support the boys through this time of transition from child to adolescent and from concrete to abstract learner, Stuart Hall Middle School provides an atmosphere that assists each student in developing strong self-esteem through opportunities of self-discovery. All of the core academic programs are enriched through specialization classes in art, library, music, physical education, computer, Spanish and Latin.

Religion:

The religious education program has as its foundation the teaching of the Catholic Church with sequential study of Scripture, the Church, and the Sacraments. Religious services include Mass, May Devotions, the Rosary, and the Stations of the Cross.

English:

Grammar and creative writing are major parts of this program and are used as tools for good, proper, and effective oral and written communication. A computer writing lab reinforces skills in composition, revision, and mechanics.

Reading:

The reading program exposes students to various genres of literature. The program focuses on the development of the critical skills needed for reading, promoting a lifelong appreciation for reading, and an expansion of the student's vocabulary.

Science:

Hands-on experiments, projects, and field trips help students develop an understanding of the three branches of science: life science, physical science, and earth science. All grade levels focus on the steps of scientific method, including research, hypothesizing, experimenting, collecting data, and drawing conclusions. The hands-on labs provide the students with opportunities to conduct research and experiments. Computer activities and projects are also a regular part of our science class. Use of our wireless Internet-connected laptops for researching, synthesizing, and organizing information sparks the interest levels of even the youngest scientists.

Math:

This curriculum solidifies and strengthens the accuracy and speed of computational skills, develops critical thinking and problem solving skills, and establishes fundamental understandings of basic geometry and algebra. The text is supplemented with computer programs and Internet activities. Additionally, the math series used for basic instruction is aligned with the NCTM standards.

Social Studies:

The social studies curriculum is centered around a study of our state, our country, and our world.

Fifth Grade, U.S. History

In the Fifth Grade, students study U.S. history beginning with the American Revolution. In addition to learning about major United States historical events, the students learn the skills of a citizen, read primary sources related to units of study, and learn how to read and interpret a variety of charts and maps containing information.

Sixth Grade, World Geography

During the Sixth Grade year, students focus on the features, cultures and people of our world. In addition to developing a strong knowledge of regional maps, students also learn of the wildlife, economic activities, governments and challenges present in our world. Building this base of geographic knowledge prepares students to explore and absorb world history in Seventh Grade.

Seventh Grade, World History

Building upon the geographic knowledge gained in Sixth Grade, Seventh Graders explore the history of mankind from prehistoric times to the Renaissance. Areas of study include ancient Mesopotamia, ancient Egypt, Classical Greece and Rome, early India, early China, Islamic cultures, West African kingdoms, medieval Japan, and Europe from the Dark Ages to the Renaissance. Students bring to life these areas of study with numerous creative projects, to include digital creations as well as traditional hand-made historical landmarks.

Research and writing skills are emphasized in all grades.

World Languages:

Spanish and Latin are offered in the Middle School world languages program. The program emphasizes comprehension of written and spoken language, oral expression, and pronunciation, with a formal approach to grammar.

Physical Education:

Middle School physical education brings all prior learning together and concentrates on using developed skills in team and game situations. There is a focus on using strategy, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Physical fitness is developed by working at fitness stations and participating in the Presidential Physical Fitness Challenge.

Art:

Middle School visual art students continue to build upon the Elements and Principles of Art introduced in the Lower School while developing more in-depth conversations about about how past and present artists, artistic movements, and cultures influence our society. Through these studies, the boys are encouraged to develop their own aesthetic perceptions and expressions through a variety of 2D and 3D media. Social skills and respect of one another is emphasized throughout our creative community.

Music:

The Music program offers a variety of opportunities to suit the talent and abilities of students of all ages. Our Middle School music program highlights the creativity and energy of our boys by exposing them to the foundations of the World Music Drumming Program. Students learn to play percussion instruments from around the world. They include the djembe, tubanos, congas, bongos and various rhythmic accessories. This program gives students the opportunity to express themselves and learn how to improvise on percussion instruments. Throughout the entire music curriculum, students continue to sing and perform for First Fridays and special programs.

Technology:

Fifth through seventh grades enjoy three mobile carts of Chromebooks. In addition, the Middle School hosts a separate computer lab with Windows laptops. Middle school students concentrate on word processing, databases, spreadsheets, and communications through use of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. The school-wide network provides access to the Internet in each classroom and in the computer labs. Responsibility, safety, and the critical use of technology are emphasized.

Library:

Library classes begin with PK4 and continue through our boys time here at Stuart Hall. As the boys become older, emphasis is placed on how to properly do research in Middle School. The curriculum includes a portion of library class when the boys are read aloud to throughout their time at Stuart Hall. Students develop an appreciation for the value of literature and of reading as a means to gain knowledge.

Life Skills:

Life Skills are taught PK4-7th Grade using the Second Step Program. The program has fourcore areas: empathy training, impulse control, anger management, and problem solving. Social Skill groups are offered to grades 1 - 7. The purpose of the groups is to increase student’s awareness of their strengths and life’s challenges. The school counselor works closely with the parents, teachers and administrators to assist all students to progress and prosper.

Study Skills:

Study Skills covers the numerous skills necessary for academic success. Students learn and use organizational skills as well as time management throughout the school year. Practice in long-term memory techniques assist students in preparing for tests and exams. Listening skills, note-taking and test-taking skills provide students with opportunities to experience success in their curriculum work.
